New to Twitter? 3 Tips for Getting Started

Last updated 4 years ago

For small businesses, having a social media presence is almost as essential as having a business website. Social platforms allow you to connect with potential customers, and turn existing customers into brand advocates. Although it may seem complicated at first, mastering Twitter does not have to be rocket science. Here are some tips for effectively turning the platform into a marketing tool:

1. Find Your Voice

The Twitter platform can seem pretty constraining to a novice. You only have 140 characters in which to complete a thought or share a link. That’s why so many tweets are really short quips or witty messages. Every business has a personality or company culture, and Twitter is the perfect way to let it shine through! Share photos from your office, tweet links to new information, use funny hashtags, and make connections between recent news and your company or industry.

2. Identify The Influencers

No matter what type of business you’re in – there is a very good chance other people are talking about it on Twitter. Use the search function to check for keywords and hashtags related to your industry. Whether it is the latest news, or product developments, a quick search can reveal influencers in a particular category. Follow accounts with tweets relevant to your industry. Write a Twitter bio that reflects your location and interest in industry trends so that influencers will follow you back.

3. @Reply and Engage!

Connecting with fans multiplies your online marketing reach. Do some searching and listening online to see if your customers are already mentioning your company when they buy something, or checking in at your location on Foursquare. Make sure you reply with the “@” symbol to any users asking you a question or looking to spark a discussion. When attending a conference or industry event, tweet about the event and use the appropriate conference hashtag, so speakers and attendees can connect with you afterwards.
